Rockstar : Music Review

This is one Rahman album which has 'that' feel - 'listen to it more and let it grow on you'. I am still confused on what to write. Can't gather words. Can't complete the full album. Can't move to other tracks without re-re-re-re listen one after another. [4 songs are already famous on TV/web, but I heard all for the first time, now- except Kun Faaya Kun !]

Phir se udd chala took me in the sky with its free-bird feel. Jo bhi main is an anthem. Yeah yeah... yeah yeah yeah... Haven't imagined Mohit Chauhan in this mood - ever. Oh wait, that is true for Saadda Haq too. Ground breaking rock anthem it is. Earthy Katiyaan Karoon is extremely addictive from the word go. Harshdeep Kaur's voice is just perfect for bubbly naughty girl. The song takes a totally different turn while it concludes. Love love it. Aaaand....Here comes the God himself singing divine Kun Faaya Kun. With Javed Ali and [fabulous] Mohit Chauhan, the song is indeed a journey to another world.

Irshad Kamil shines throughout the songs. Man ! What words ! what words ! Can't get enough enough enough..

To settle the things down, next track Shehar main is peppy track with fun lyrics. It takes us straight to the studio where a composer [Anu Malik?] is teaching Jordan to sing a track. Mohit FTW again. And after that trip to recording studio, Rahman takes listener to a gypsy outing. Close your eyes and let Hawwa Hawwa show you the gypsy dance around you. Excellent arrangements and singing - and interesting story telling inside the song. All the 'feel good' tracks, the album enters the rebellious and dark mood. [including Sadda Haq]. Aur Ho is all about Mohit and his outstanding vocals combined with fabulous words. Equally fabulous words and this time Rahman singing pacey Nadaan Parindey - takes an interesting turn when Mohit's part comes.

Was surprised to see Kavitha ji in credits. Its been a long time, but somehow Tum Ko does pale in comparison with all the other tracks. A slow tabla laden haunting track it is. May be it will take time [or after watching the movie] to grow. [just like Khili re..from Raavan]. The track has traces of next track - Tum Ho. Even the little piece, The Meeting Place has dashes of this tune. Mohit is in his regular genre in Tum Ho makes an engaging listen. Instrumental Tango For Taj has sound of Hawwa Hawwa with fantastic piano tune. While fusion of Guitar and Shehnai in The Dichotomy of Fame makes an excellent listen. Last piece - The Meeting Place leave listener craving for more. Very short one.

Well, this was definitely worth all the hype, wait and curiosity generated around the album. Hope Imtiaz Ali has translated it well on the screen. [that looks assured - by the videos which are out by far, Jo Bhi main is my favorite]. Fingers crossed for the movie. Because it has 6 more tracks [may be instrumental ones]. A last thought and request to Imtiaz -- Can we have this movie in IMAX ???? Pleeeeez?

  20. Absolutely Disappointing album...out of 14 tracks only 4 is good but not so attractive and repetitive.I am a big fan of rahman since i have heard the music of 'rosa'.this man with his god gifted ability to create awesome music served the film industry for almost two decades. But unfortunately this album will be his hatrick failure after yuvraaz and jhoota hi sahi.A musical film like rockstar must need superhit songs as like the movie 'rock on' ,' life in a metro ', both of which had strong appeal for class as well as mass.I think it was not a good idea to break combination of pritam and imtiaz .It would ok if shankar-ehsan-loy done this album.

    1. Heard a roaring laughter in my head the moment i read Rock on!! Did it have mass appeal?? Yeah... But was it half or even nearly as classy as Rockstar? A big NO!
Rockstar is a benchmark of Real Music, that comes once in 5 years or so, that teaches every other budding composers how its really done!! I love Pritam's Music too but AR is in another league altogether. As far as music sense and choice of actor goes Imtiaz Ali knows what he is doing! I can't believe anyone can question him...

Don't talk like blind fan...make comments with music sense...u mentioned rock on comprises pop song!!!...how disappointing it is that u have no sense about the difference between rock and pop!!
I could mentioned many record breaking movie album like 'bodyguard' ,'om shanti om', 'gangster' but these are not suited for comparison with 'rockstar'.Those who has music sense should appreciate the work of pritam,himesh,vishal-shekar and shankar-ehsan lay.Obviously,AR Rahman sir is a legend but it doesn't mean he is devoid of failure as a human being .I hope he will be back next time with his magic.

Oh God of music, please forgive the man who not only puts bodyguard/ om shanti om and rockstar in once sentence but ranks them above it! I am not a crazy AR Fanatic, but u have to be blind... Oh sorry... Completely deaf to even say those words. There is a genre called Pop Rock.. which is basically Rock Music but have a pop song feel to it. Sorry to burst your bubble but yeah, thats what Rock on was! and I love SEL's music but it would be a crime to music to compare Rock on with Rockstar!

  27. Rahman's pretty much back, i was massively disappointed with whatever he had done between delhi 6 and this album apart from "if i rise" from 127 hrs , but Rcokstar definitely does justice to the great name .

Many songs are exceptional, fun to grovve to nadaan parindey , apart from the usual suspects ... thankfully the dreadful, robot, raavan, JHS , yaaro india bula liya days are over for good

  28. The album rockstar is an album for actual musicians, who knows one or two things about music...this a superbly crafted, technically monumental album, extensive experiments and layers...just love it....ppl who doesn't have global music exposure would get a tuff time connecting to this album.....to me it's a masterpiece ..have been listening the entire album on loop...and yer AR Rahman has become like oxygen to me...I wanna take this oppurtunity to thank God for giving us Mr ar rahman....this guy is a bloody genius...even this is an unerstatement!! rahman 4 eva...ps: Buy original CD's and download legal songs from itunes...be a music lover nt a pirate

@ecpecting rockstar a great albumrehman just tried, but failed, iam not expecting this from such a maestro but it proves no one is perfect for every kind of music.rock on and london dreams are great album in this genre but rockstar is no where near it.choice of chauhan is also wrong soft silky voice didn't work here.

Life in metro and rock on were popular music wise....but common this album is something else....the effort shows....and who is to say rockstar needs to have only rocksongs.....thats like saying ra one should only have robots singing.....as a soudtrack with a difference......arockstar is epic...those who are complaining i urge you to give up on Rahman, for given your disposit8on, even if rahman g8ves dil se today you will not looking like it today

  32. Well, hello everyone out there. I would like to add my bit here. I feel Rockstar is NOT a Rock album. Its a movie about love, betrayal, rise, fame and fall. Rock is just a medium that moves the story ahead. Unlike Rock on and London Dreams - where the 'main theme' was Rock only. Both of those scores were great in their own theme. But here, Rahman has created songs for every mood every line of the story. So you never know, even if you do not like it now, but after the movie you might fall for it.

On the other note, Life in a Metro is one of the best works of Pritam [I don't know if he has plagiarized any track in that one too]. Think we should stop comparing and enjoy individually everyone's compositions.

  33. everyone expected something huge after they came to know the name of the film as rockstar.. expecting it will be like rock on...but to be frank what i want to say is just a big WOWWWWW... you can't compare it with rock on or any other film.. its pure music.. each and every bit.. just raw music.. just raw....first time hearing won't make any thing in your mind... but when you hear it more and more you crave for it....and i agree with dunkdaft

  43. Why r u comparing Pritam and Rahman!!!! Strange!!!! Pritam is not a educated Mucisian just crafts the old melodies and rewrittes the notes for the songs!!! (check in the net) ARR is the Original composer. As "Drunk Draft" said songs of Rockstar will go along with the mood of the film. All are situational songs. I think no other MD will do justice for the film of this kind. Because there is no other MD present in India except ARR who knows all kinds of music. People will come to know how album helps the film once it get released.

  44. Just loved it... !!

Like the way cross coupling & fading words in "Phir se.." track. Simply creating amazing sound with fluent flowing rhythm... like flying.

I love the sufi songs composed by Rahman always. I find the devotional feeling touching to the soul.

    Keep it up.. Rahman!

  47. @greendreamer- I love the songs of "Rock on" good album. But "Rockstar" is a character driven film the music is fully based on situations, so don't comment blindly. If u don't like, saw the movie u will like the song. You r talking abt the 4 songs which is out on TV n web right? U will like it becoz u saw the video...

  48. To anonymous,
what happened to u? it seems that u r ambiguous as u r making different comments in different times.mass people are not influenced by reviews.they just thrash out if they do not like the songs through first listening. This album has no mass appeal,so it will fail commercially although it is an innovative creation.
    To m*****f****r culpritesh,
this is not a comparison, no md in india is equivalent with rahman .
Though pritam is a copier, still he is the big choice of big banner,he is a big hit maker whose 97% songs achieved a big musical success in this big country.actually it is a matter of consistency.

Mass people are not influenced by reviews & awards. They just thrash out if they do not like the songs through first listening. This album has no mass appeal,so it will fail commercially.
But there is one class of people, who find good in bad and therefore they liked Rock star Music.

TheRock star already flopped and also its music. Now it may be given many awards, people rejected all of Rok Star.
